The Robertsons from Duck Dynasty are the gifts that keep on giving because of all the flat-out idiotic things they say. We’re used to those comments coming from patriarch Phil Robertson, but now Si Robertson (“Uncle Si”) is getting into the mix.
In an interview with the Christian Post, Robertson (who’s promoting a new film called Faith of Our Fathers) explained why atheists don’t really exist:
“I dont believe there’s a such thing as an atheist. Because there’s too much documentation. Our calenders are based on Jesus Christ.”
…. the hell?
While the Gregorian calendar we use has a religious history (because the powerful Catholic Church adopted it hundreds of years ago), most of the months are named after Roman gods, goddesses, and leaders while the rest have Latin roots. Jesus doesn’t come into play here.
Maybe Robertson was really talking about the designations AD and BC? Again, that doesn’t prove anything other than the Church once had a lot of power. Historians today have moved away from those abbreviations.
More importantly, none of that proves atheists don’t exist.
So Robertson kept explaining himself:
… [Robertson] reiterated his point that when it comes to circumstances of life and death, there aren’t any atheists. “Because if you get in a serious bind, the first thing you’ll do is say [God,] please help me.”
He’s parroting the offensive canard that “there are no atheists in foxholes,” which is just not true. I would be glad to introduce Robertson to atheists who serve in the military, who risk their lives in defense of our country, who rely on each other instead of a Higher Power if they need help.
In short, Robertson’s “proof” for why atheists don’t exist boils down to: He doesn’t know any and he’s never picked up a history book.
I guess we shouldn’t be surprised. Ignorance mixed with bullshit is his family’s currency these days.
