LGBT Flag Outside Florida County Center Is “Unbearable,” Says Christian Employee

After the mass shooting in Orlando last week, a rainbow flag went up outside the county center in Hillsborough, Florida. But a complaint from a Christian may soon bring it down:

In an email sent to… the county human relations director Peggy Rowe on Thursday, [Commissioner Stacy] White said he received an anonymous complaint from a county employee that the presence of the flag was “nearly unbearable” for her to pass on her way to work and created a “hostile work environment.”

This isn’t an anti-Christian symbol. This isn’t the promotion of any controversial position. This is merely showing solidarity with a group of people who were targeted in an all-out attack. But I guess showing empathy for dead people is too “hostile” for her.

Commissioner Stacy White is furious with his colleagues for voting 5-1 to raise the flag on Wednesday without considering the impact it would have on bigots:

“It is still — in my view — unconscionable that the county administrator didn’t express to the board that this divisive symbol might create an uncomfortable workplace environment for many of his employees,” White wrote.

It’s only divisive if you’re an asshole.

It’s only divisive if you think, as the shooter apparently did, that LGBT people aren’t worthy of love, compassion, and equality.

At least one government official picked up on that:

“I believe that I had no reasonable basis to believe that the Board’s action would create a hostile or uncomfortable work environment,” [County Administrator Mike] Merrill wrote.

“Reasonable” being the key word there. No reasonable person has a problem with this. Just a Christian who thinks the world revolves around her, even when other people were killed in the worst mass shooting in American history.
