Sure, a lot of Christian conservatives have a problem with public schools. Just look at Betsy DeVos. But “Coach” Dave Daubenmire went even further on his “Pass The Salt Live” webcast Thursday, saying that Christian parents who allowed their kids to attend public school were sanctioning “spiritual rape.”
“The Christian education of children is paramount to a culture,” he declared, “but what’s going on is the raping, the spiritual raping of children … We are having spiritual rape take place right in front of us and the churches don’t even recognize it and aren’t doing anything to alter it.”
“It’s better for you to put a millstone around your neck, I say, than to allow your children to be taught that homosexuality is normal,” Daubenmire continued, “and that two men can get married and two women can get married. To expose that to [children,] I don’t know if there is anything more wicked; that’s rape, that is spiritual rape.”
Setting aside the absurd language, it’s ridiculous to fault teachers for treating LGBT people as human beings instead of monsters who will spend an eternity in Hell if they consummate their relationships (as many pastors do). The American Psychiatric Association doesn’t see homosexuality as a problem, either.
Daubenmire seems to suggest that kids would end up more like him — bigoted and hateful — if only public school teachers would get out of the way and more Christians homeschooled their children.
All the more reason to thank the teachers around you. They’re helping mold kind, decent human beings who are hopefully nothing like Daubenmire.
It’s not like he’s a role model when it comes to parenting, either. Several years ago, his son was sentenced to five years of probation on charges of child pornography.
