Evangelical Leaders, Ignoring Everyone Suffering Under Trump, Declare 2017 the “Year of Good News”

According to dozens of evangelical Christian leaders who just signed a joint statement, 2017 will be the “Year of Good News”:

In a time of fake news, distracting news, divisive news, disorderly news, and, sometimes, depressing news, we — as Christians and as leaders — want to recommit ourselves to making sure that the Good News of Jesus cuts through it all. We call upon Christians in America to make 2017 “The Year of Good News.”

We don’t have to read any more of the letter. When the biggest purveyors of fake news, bad science, irresponsible sex education, and bigotry against people who aren’t like them want you to celebrate the “Good News,” you have every right to roll your eyes and give them a one-finger salute.

They act like the fake, distracting, divisive, disorderly, depressing news is beneath them when, in fact, they’re the ones who elevated it all to the White House. While the rest of us were sounding the sirens of the pussy-grabbing, Russia-loving, narcissistic, know-nothing Donald Trump, they just ignored the facts in the hope that they’d get a Supreme Court appointment out of it.

80% of white evangelical Christians voted for Trump. If it wasn’t for white evangelicals, Trump wouldn’t be in power right now. So how dare they pretend that they’re not directly responsible for the despair so many people feel?

These Christian leaders don’t give a damn about the LGBT people who now have to worry about their civil rights disappearing, becoming victims of legal discrimination by Christian business owners, or being able to pee in the proper bathrooms.

They don’t care about the immigrants whose families now live in fear of being torn apart because the President wants to deport everyone here illegally.

They don’t care about the women who will struggle to have their health care needs met because Republicans are dead set on making sure Planned Parenthood can’t provide that help to anyone.

They don’t care about the environment and climate change and how much worse it’ll get, because, if they don’t outright deny it, they think they’ll be raptured before it ever affects them.

They don’t care about public education being decimated by this administration because their focus is on homeschooling and private religious schools.

And if they think I’m mischaracterizing their positions on any of these things, then they need to be vocal in criticizing what Trump is doing, because nothing he’s done in the past month suggests “Good News” for anyone who’s not a white evangelical Christian.

This sort of tone-deaf statement might have made sense in an email to the church members themselves, not as an open letter to those who will be suffering because the same Christians who routinely persecute different groups of people in their everyday lives now have allies in the White House.

Spreading the word of Jesus while the world is on fire doesn’t make anything better for the rest of us.
