There’s a running (unfunny) joke among waiters and waitresses that Sunday morning is the worst time to work because Christians are horrible tippers. They figure Sunday is a day of rest, therefore waiters don’t deserve anything… even though the Christians chose to eat there.
It was a different story for Samantha Heaton, a waitress at a Buffalo Wild Wings in Rockport, Illinois, who got stiffed on a bill worth $60.55 by a Christian family of five because she dared to have an LGBTQ equality tattoo on her forearm. And Christians can’t stand equality.
Can’t tip someone who doesn’t love Jesus! Bad tatoo.
To be sure, Jesus never came up in their Saturday night conversation. Neither did any LGBTQ-related issues. The Christians just saw the tattoo, assumed Heaton was the worst of the worst (i.e. Godless, Jewish, Democrat, etc. based on their note), and gave her nothing but their faith-based wisdom. Heaton told the Rock River Times she was surprised by their actions:
“I went above and beyond for this couple, and for them to leave that (note) kind of hurt,” Heaton, 20, said. “Like, I have bills to pay too.”
She added that — wait for it — she was a Christian herself. But unlike the bigots, she was a Christian who cares about what’s in people’s hearts, not what they look like on the outside.
The image above, which has since gone viral, is courtesy of Heaton’s co-worker, Joelle Nicole Maish, who noted on Facebook that there are LGBTQ people who are religious and that religious people shouldn’t “disrespect or act in such ways to other people.”
She’s right on both counts… though there’s no shortage of examples of religious people acting disrespectful. It’s like that saying: “Love the sinner, hate the sin, but if you mix the two up, Jesus will totally look the other way.”
Heaton said she didn’t want any donations and would give to charity anything she received, but maybe by highlighting this action, it’ll prevent it from happening to another waitress in the future.
Hi everybody! Thank you for all the support! This message is for you pic.twitter.com/OFJnt0E1rd
