Image via Wikipedia (Looks like Emma Bovary could use sunnier skies as well!) I don’t know when it really started, but in the past few years I’ve noticed more and more that when the weather isn’t sunny, I’m a wreck. I’m sure it’s a combination of several things, but I really feel gloomy today, and, naturally, there’s no sun. It was sort of a tiny bit sunny yesterday, so I was okay. I’m not alone in this, I know.... Read more

I’ve been doing some Bible reading in the book of Genesis about Abraham and Sarah. In case you’re interested exactly what I’m referencing, it’s Genesis, Chapter 16, verses 1-4. In this story, Sarah has figured enough is enough, and so she tells Abraham to go ahead and have sex with her maid, Hagar. (Just for the record, Hagar’s first name was NOT Sammy!)  We read elsewhere in Genesis that Abraham was the friend of God. Get that: friend. Not sometime... Read more

Yay! Today is the feast day of Saint Harriet! I’m sure, without her constant intercession, I’d be even more of a degenerate than I already am. There are probably people out there who don’t know what an ampersand is. If so, I give you an intellectually condescending glance. It all started with a trip my local Wells Fargo, because they were giving away a free optical mouse if you talked with a personal banker to review your accounts! Since I’ve always been a sucker for promotional items, I immediately signed up, and after an utterly delightful hour long meeting (and I am NOT joking—it really was... Read more

Decided to hang with Sophia for an overnighter, and we decided to stay at the South Bend Microtel. Very cute room! You can see the window seat, and it was really large enough to sleep on, although I’m not sure that the cushion would be too comfortable as a bed. All in all, quite nice and a great deal for the money. Breakfast is included, and their breakfast bar had a Belgian waffle maker! I’d never seen a self-serve one... Read more

Not an April Fool’s Day surprise, but I did actually get a whopping six inches cut off my hair. Sophia had arranged for me to get a haircut at It’s All About You, a local salon. My lovely stylist asked about how much I’d like to get cut, and when I said four inches, she replied that if I cut six I could donate it for a wig for a child with cancer, so I did it! Yay! Since this... Read more

Image by Old Shoe Woman via Flickr Yum, it’s Lent! I don’t know at what point having fish became equal to being deprived, but it’s not been during my lifetime. In fact, considering that for the past ten years, I haven’t been eating a lot of meat (too darn expensive, except the occasional hamburger), eating fish, especially seafood, is quite the luxury. Not, of course, tuna fish. Yes, I suppose a tuna salad sandwich isn’t something I’d consider a luxury... Read more

Well, we did it, so I guess that means we’re not, what, “virgins” anymore. (Does anybody really use that word?) Once you’ve done it, you really can’t go back to the place you were before. Things aren’t the same. You feel … different. Changed. You want to tell everyone, maybe even people you don’t know. And yet you can’t seem to find the words that express your … hmmm, your experience? Your feelings? I don’t k now. But I do... Read more

Lately, I’ve been amused by a blog called Stuff Christians Like, (now a book, pictured at right) which is written by a guy, one Jonathan Acuff, who is just completely unashamed in his criticism of all things Christian, while still remaining a good Christian. I have to respect this guy. It’s easy to poke fun at things you don’t like. But it’s even easier, not to mention more fun, to poke fun at things you really love! So, believing... Read more

I’ve discovered, over time, that keeping up appearances is something I both love and hate. Some days, there’s nothing I’d rather do than just hang out in a pair of jeans and a grungy t-shirt and do nothing to my hair. But then, I think, what would Marie Antoinette do? Did she EVER have a day when she just didn’t get dressed? “Oh, sorry, Louis, I just wanted to be déshabille in my chemise and stockings. Non, I didn’t want... Read more
