I’ve never really been one for politics. Maybe it’s my working class upbringing that instilled in me the belief that politics are for other people (by which I mean those with money) and politicians, regardless of which side they stand, can never be trusted.
As I get older, the world of politics has moved closer and the cold fingers of Westminster touch my life and those around me.
If you’re reading this from outside the UK, you may not be aware of the train wreck that is British government and the debacle of Brexit. You probably didn’t see the propaganda and untruths thrown about in media prior to the referendum, nor the jumping of ship from key political figures afterwards. It’s an embarrassment: a catastrophe sold to the public on xenophobia and lies.
Britain is a mess.
People are suffering.
Brexit is the highly visible aspect of political incompetence but travel to normal towns, full of normal people and you see the reality of a poorly run country. Rough sleepers are on every High Street, the use of food banks has soared, elderly are left on trolleys in hospitals, one in 4 children are brought up in poverty and one in 15 people have attempted suicide.
Britain is the fifth richest country in the world. Let that sink in.
And I know that these problems are not exclusively ours. Political systems in the West are not working (we have Brexit, the US has Trump). People are hurting and we’re being fed lies.
As citizens it’s easy to feel powerless in a system that is clearly broken.
But as witches, we have a way to influence outcomes and instigate change. We have magick.
Sigil Magick for Change
My friend Jonathan Argento has created a Leveller sigil to publicly expose those who oppress the poor and flout their privilege to line their own pockets. I’ll let him tell you about it in the video below (but turn the volume up because the videographer, me, had the mic turned the wrong way).
There’s a handout that goes with the video that includes the sigil – you can download it here.
If you’re not into watching videos, the gist of what Jonathan says is:
- The sigil calls on a thought-form – the Leveller – to expose people with political power that oppress the poor to line their own pockets.
- Write the sigil under a bridge, if possible (and be sensible, don’t get arrested for graffiti).
- Let magick do its thing.
This isn’t a UK specific sigil. My gods, we need a global unveiling of people in power who oppress the poor. Wherever you are in the world, find a bridge and get sigilling (that is so now a verb). Channel the spirit of Aradia as you do so, she’d like that.
My husband and I went out last Sunday morning, armed with chalk and a determination to find as many local bridges as possible. You can’t get in or out of my hometown without driving over a sigil or two.
I hope you’ll join in with the sigil. It’s time for a change. In fact, change is long overdue.
