Hooked on Wisdom

Hooked on Wisdom
When I read a phrase like “For wisdom will enter your heart” (Proverbs 2:9a), I lean in to find out how that happens.
I long for wisdom, personally.
I long for wisdom in my marriage.
I long for wisdom for my children.
How does wisdom “enter your heart”?
According to verse 6, “the LORD gives wisdom” and from “His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” So, answer #1 is by reading and knowing what God says. Gratefully, we have 66 books of the Bible to help us know what He has said from His mouth.
But the author of Proverbs continues. . .
  • “He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,” (v. 7)
  • ”for He guards the course of the just and protects the way of His faithful ones.” (v. 8).
Answer #2 for how wisdom enters your heart is by being “upright” and “blameless” and “just” and “faithful.”
Answer #1: Wisdom comes from the LORD.
Answer #2: Wisdom is walking “uprightly” and “blameless” and “just” and “faithfully.”
Now notice verse 9 (the verse between Answers #1 and #2 and how wisdom enters your heart…
“Then you will understand what is right and just and fair – every good path.” (v.9)
Once you do these, in other words, then you will understand. . .
Interesting. It’s as if the author puts Answers #1 and #2 together.
My take-away for how wisdom enters my heart is this: know and believe and act on what God has said. Trust that what He says leads to upright and blameless and just and faithful living. When you do, you will experience the reality of blessing that comes from trusting Him. THEN, wisdom enters your heart.
To put it another way, wisdom enters your heart when you become “hooked” on the reality that what God says is accurate because you believed it, acted on it, and experienced for yourself the reality of being blessed by doing it.
The LORD tells us how to live.
We believe it and act on it.
We experience the pleasure of doing things His way.
We’re hooked and want more.
Wisdom enters your heart.
Want wisdom? Take God at His word. Do what He says. Watch how it works in and around your life. You’ll be hooked. Wisdom will enter your heart. You won’t be able to deny the reality of what you now know to be true.
