According to this article, the ongoing narrative that Isis is the result of poor, uneducated people oppressed by Western Capitalism might not be true. I know that’s hard to believe. After all, we’ve only spent 15 years hearing that Islamic terrorism is the result of poor, uneducated people oppressed by Western Capitalism, only to find out that, as often as not, the perpetrators and planners are middle class to wealthy individuals with college educations, many living in the West itself. Narratives are much more enjoyable when we don’t sweat reality. That’s not to say none are poor or uneducated. But like most things, it’s more complicated than an appraisal that fits neatly on a bumper sticker.
