Protect our children

Protect our children October 14, 2016

From unsafe learning environments.  I read this story and kept thinking Rod Serling was going to step out from behind my computer cabinet.  The amazing thing is that the lesson was supposed to bring attention to the use of derogatory language. It’s still not enough.  I was heartened to see that the complaining group said that books with difficult topics, like To Kill a Mockingbird, should be assigned.  Nice to hear.  But just can’t help shaking my head.   The world doesn’t operate in the way we’re teaching our kids.  Heck, most of us adults don’t operate that way or even want to operate that way.  There was a time when adults felt compelled to prepare kids for the real world, as opposed to telling kids the way it ain’t. As I told my boys, those same coaches you had that gave everyone trophies no matter how they did won’t hire you if you’re not the best.  The same goes for what we’re doing in our classrooms.
