An eerie recording from Armistice Day

In 1918, the British were using recordings and the recorded signals were recorded on film.  Here is a photo of the recording that took place when the guns fell silent.  My two grandfathers were in that war.  It’s sobering that you see the noise of the bombardments and then, in a minute, quiet.  We forget how horrible was World War I.  Overshadowed by the Second World War, the carnage visited on actual servicemen was almost the same.   Most of the causalities of WWII came by way of citizen casualties, and then primarily at the hands of Axis Powers, especially those 20 million Russians who were killed.  But in WWI, survival on the lines was far from a mathematical certainty, and on this day, 98 years ago, they finally had a fighting chance.
