And decides to ask Rust Belt Democrats why they swung for Trump. I know, that’s radical. Why ask people what they think and why they think it? Anyway, Van Jones asks, and learns something that is pretty common sense.
Turns out, they didn’t vote for Trump out of some latent desire to embrace America’s racist, imperialist, genocidal past by loving racism and joining the Alt-Right.
They voted for Trump because, well, things weren’t going well for them. Some voted for Obama, but felt promises weren’t delivered, and things are no better than 2008, if not worse. They voted for change in 2008, they voted for change in 2016.
Democrats continue to join the media in screaming hysterics, conspiracy theories, rigged elections, and refusing to ignore the bleeding obvious. Don’t believe your own press. Just because the press was working overtime to convince people that everything is awesome doesn’t mean it is. And those who know it isn’t because of their own plights aren’t going to buy propaganda that tells them to deny their realities.
There are many reasons, of course. But Hillary’s decision to exemplify the ultimate example of establishment politics, promising to do nothing but keep on as before, would only work where peace and prosperity were closer to a reality, rather than a baseless headline that was easily debunked by driving down the street and looking at Main Street America.
If Democrats can’t even admit that much, then there’s likely little hope they’ll be willing to look at deeper, more troubling reasons that even Van Jones will fear to tackle.
