Lest we get careless, the most important person we need to improve is the person we see in the mirror every morning. That’s usually enough to keep most people busy.
Worse still is when we become so sure we have it down, that we become unteachable. That’s what had happened here. People who knew so much, they weren’t prepared to listen. Note that this approach was not common for Jesus. This is not how he typically addressed people.
He certainly didn’t address prostitutes, tax collectors and other sinful types that way. He addressed the religious elites that way.
So a word of caution as we continue through Holy Week. As tempting as it is to wonder why all those other people are out there screwing up the world, it might be prudent to start with ourselves.
