Not surprising.  Believe it or not, there are still some crazies out there who aren’t sold on the whole post-Christian, secular liberal world view.   That view, of course, is the standard against which our educational designs are measured.  My wife, a former teacher and then editor in an educational publishing company, has no problem telling stories about the obvious inroads that modern liberalism and secular ideals have made into our educational industries.  Hence former educator and former educational publisher. Funny... Read more

An associate pastor of a United Church of Christ has published a book saying sex outside of marriage is just fine, as long as it’s mutually pleasurable and affirming.  OK.  And?  This is the United Church of Christ.  It’s like a news story telling me Jack Chick wrote a book suggesting Catholicism is wrong. I attended a UCC early in my Christian walk.  Theological novice that I was, I nonetheless got whiffs of something wrong.  Amateur thinking was all I... Read more

IMHO, People is to journalism what Twilight is to literature.  But when you’re trying to find mainstream coverage of a story about the possible dark side of our modern sex culture, sometimes you have to compromise a little.  The media tends to guard rather jealously the idea that our modern sexual norms are all happy and wonderful and never the cause of problems or harm. I’ve often wondered if that’s why it took the MSM so long to jump on... Read more

I won’t say much, as I determined not to bring any debates or disputes I had with Mark to Patheos.  But this is being talked about across a host of blogs and websites.  I’ve had a few ask me my views, and I don’t wish to go any further into the topic than the simple response below.  But given the posts that have been written, and several responses I’ve seen, including excuses made, I felt I needed to say something.... Read more

So a legal challenge to remove a statue of the Ten Commandments in Maryland has been dropped.  The reason, according to this story, is not mentioned.  Hopefully it’s because the fellow stopped and thought about what kind of country we’re building. Maybe it’s just me, but if I moved to a country steeped in Islam or even atheism, I wouldn’t be bothered if the overall culture reflected that influence, even in places like government buildings.  Nations have a right to define themselves.... Read more

It looks like the Ben Hur remake is on its way to surpassing Waterworld as the box office bomb against which all box office bombs are measured.  What went wrong?  Don’t know.  There are enough bad reviews, as well as word of mouth, that suggest it’s not worth paying top ticket price to see.  Not that critics always shape box office results, but a movie that is a remake of one of the most successful, celebrated and iconic movies of all... Read more

Whether listening to them give glory to God, or watching them pray before or after events, it’s hard to miss the obvious role that faith plays in the lives of many Olympic athletes.  Hard for everyone except the national news media.  The fact that the media has gone out of its way to avoid the focus on faith that so many athletes are willing to talk about when given the chance, has become a story unto itself. When it is covered, I... Read more

Except it’s pretty much spot on.  Trying to boil the presence of Donald Trump down to one set of ‘them’ is a lost cause.  Trump within reach of the White House is the result of many things on all sides of the debates.  This article hits on one of the glaring issues, one that is often ignored or denied. Like my boys said – and it’s the truest statement of them all – Donald Trump is the candidate that the... Read more

And America rocks!  Take that world!   Heh.  Can’t help but indulge in some good old pride in our country.  The whole Olympics went off without a hitch, and no violence or major problems.   Which is praiseworthy in itself.  Speaking of praise, I’ll touch on something I and many others have noticed later.  But for now, it’s enough to be thankful for a good overall Olympic experience, the inspiration that comes from watching  so many athletes compete and excel, and of course... Read more
