Robert Mueller’s Death and the State of the American Church

Robert Mueller, former FBI Director who also served as special counsel to the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, passed away on March 20, 2026, at the age of 81. His 12-year tenure at the FBI started a week before the attacks of September 11, 2001, and he served under Presidents of both parties.

Former Presidents From Both Parties React

The George W. Bush Presidential Center released this statement on behalf of the Republican president who nominated Mueller:

“Laura and I are deeply saddened by the loss of Robert Mueller. Bob dedicated his life to public service. As a Marine in Vietnam, he proved he was ready for tough

assignments. He earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart before returning home to pursue law. In 2001, only one week into the job as the 6th Director of the F.B.I., Bob transitioned the agency’s mission to protecting the homeland after September 11. He led it effectively, helping prevent another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. Laura and I send our heartfelt sympathy to his wife of nearly 60 years, Ann, and the Mueller family.

President Obama, the Democratic president who kept Mueller after his 10-year term had expired, wrote on X/Twitter:

“Bob Mueller was one of the finest directors in the history of the FBI, transforming the bureau after 9/11 and saving countless lives.”

“But it was his relentless commitment to the rule of law and his unwavering belief in our bedrock values that made him one of the most respected public servants of our time. Michelle and I send our condolences to Bob’s family, and everyone who knew and admired him.”

I have chosen not to quote the current president’s response to Mueller’s death. Rather, I will quote equally disturbing reactions from some other people, presumably his supporters, since they demonstrate some of the issues I have addressed in previous essays.

I have recently come across horrific memes on social media that demonstrate the sad state of American Christianity.  The first is an image of Mueller – supposedly in hell – surrounded by fiery flames, with several “celebratory” comments stating that he “deserves” to be there,  “can rot in hell,” and that the world is better off without him.

These comments appear to have been motivated by politics rather than religious beliefs.  It is bad enough that people are rejoicing over someone’s death, but the fact that some people assume he is in hell because he didn’t show fealty to a particular president is even more concerning. Even worse, these people are gloating about the idea of someone they view as an “enemy” being in hell! (For the record, Bob Mueller was a Republican).

I don’t know who wrote these comments, so I can’t speak to their religious beliefs. Based on the content, it’s likely they identify as Christians.

Faith Should Be More Than “Fire Insurance.”

In a previous essay, I referenced the work of Pat Kahnke, a retired evangelical pastor. Kahnke describes how people’s beliefs about the afterlife often have a negative impact on how they treat their fellow human beings. In his words, many Christians believe that their own salvation is “secure;” they have “fire insurance” and a sense of “existential relief,” and that is the sole content and function of their faith. They are grateful that Jesus saved them from an eternity in hell but not interested in anything else he has to say.

Kahnke says that “If your faith teaches you that your own personal eternal destiny as a chosen one of God is secure, but that conscious eternal torment is the consequence for billions of people who believe differently, I believe that’s not only a bad interpretation of scripture, but I think it dehumanizes entire groups of people in ways that evangelicals just haven’t come to terms with.”

Understandably, some people believe in eternal fire based on their interpretation of the Bible, even though there are different interpretations to the scriptures that reference the afterlife, as I’ve discussed in other essays. However, it is not normal and certainly not “Christian” or “Christlike” to rejoice over the idea that some other people might be burning in hell – forever. Yet another problematic issue is the idea that people will go to hell based on having the “wrong” political ideology.

A meme posted by another pastor showed a message he received on social media that further demonstrates this type of thinking. According to the commentator, speaking out against the “Christian” President is an affront to God Himself. The commentator goes on to declare that they will laugh at this pastor when he is burning in hell.

We have a serious problem. Beyond the depravity of rejoicing at the idea that other people may burn in hell forever, there are those who believe that if there was no hell, Jesus’ sacrifice was in vain.

Here is another comment from social media:

“If there is no hell, then why did Jesus sacrifice himself on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins? If there was nothing to be saved from, then He died in vain.”

This viewpoint misses the whole part about Jesus showing us how to live.

A Gentle Reminder: We Are Called to Love Our Neighbors

A worldview that focuses on an obsession with the afterlife risks missing out on what we, as followers of Christ, are called to do in this life, like loving our neighbor and caring for the poor and marginalized.

The Daily Beast describes Robert Mueller as a “Bronze Star combat veteran, known for his devout faith, devotion to his family and public service.” That sounds much more Christ-like than the people who are rejoicing over the idea that others will burn for eternity. I hope they find out what it means to be true followers of Christ.

May Bob Mueller’s soul rest in peace and may his memory be blessed.
