Love Songs, Love Letters, and Musical Messages

What is more romantic than a love letter? What is more romantic and intimate than a love song?  Combine the two and you have a very emotionally charged situation. All the sappy romantic movies take advantage of music and lyrics that offer an etherial dialogue between the characters. When we hear certain music with or without lyrics, we know what is taking place in the movie. But, as Erin Wathen says in her article “Every Kind of Love Song,” the bigger message is not about music itself, but about love in general.” So what happens when, instead of from characters in a movie, the inspired words are from God to the Beloved or the Beloved to God? Musical messages with God–love lyrics–can give a lady (or gentleman) all the feels, in a spiritual way.

OK, I know, right, this is not an original idea. After all, there’s a whole book of the Bible dedicated to the very thing–The Song of Songs, or, if you prefer, The Song of Solomon. The book expresses all the longing, desire, and passion that lovers feel for one another and that God has expressed toward us. I tell my writing students all the time that there is no literary technique, no genre, that God didn’t invent and use first.

Contemporary Musical Messages with God

Many talented and inspired Christian writers over time have penned love lyrics–musical messages with God. In honor of Valentine’s Day, I would like to share the five best (in my humble opinion) musical messages, to or from the Lord.

You probably know many of these songs, but you may have never paid attention to the lyrics. So here you go: words of love. Prepare your heart to flutter.

#5: Great is Thy Faithfulness

Thomas O. Chisholm 1923

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.

Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.

# 4: You Are Mine

David Haas 1957

I will come to you in the silence,

I will lift you from all your fear,

You will hear my voice

I claim you as my choice

Be still and know I am near.

I am hope for all who are hopeless,

I am eyes for all who long to see,

In the shadows of the night, I will bring you light,

Come and rest in me.

Do not be afraid, I am with you,

I have called you each by name,

Come and follow me, I will bring you home,

I love you and you are mine.

I am strength for all the despairing,

Healing for the ones who dwell in shame,

All the blind will see, the lame will all run free

And all will know my name.

I am the Word that leads all to freedom,

I am the peace the world can not give

I will call your name, embracing all your pain,

Stand up, now, walk and live.

Do not be afraid, I am with you,

I have called you each by name,

Come and follow me, I will bring you home,

I love you and you are mine.

#3: Love Song

Brad Avery / David Carr / Johnny Mac Powell / Mark D Lee / Tai Anderson, 1996

I’ve heard it said that a man would climb a mountain

Just to be with the one he loves

How many times has he broken that promise

It has never been done

I’ve never climbed the highest mountain

But I walked the hill of Calvary

Just to be with you, I’d do anything

There’s not price I would not pay

Just to be with you, I’d give anything

I would give my life away

I’ve heard it said that a man would swim the ocean

Just to be with the one he loves

How many times has he broken that promise

It can never be done

I’ve never swam the deepest ocean

But I walked upon the raging sea

Just to be with you, I’d do anything

There’s not price I would not pay

Just to be with you, I’d give anything

I would give my life away

I know that you don’t understand the fullness of My love

How I died upon the cross for your sins

And I know you don’t realize how much that I gave you

But I promise, I would do it all again

Just to be with you, I did everything

There’s not price I did not pay

Just to be with you, I gave everything

Yes, I gave my life away

#2 I Could Sing of Your Love Forever

   Martin Smith 2005

Over the mountains and the sea

Your river runs with love for me

And I will open up my heart

And let the healer set me free

I’m happy to be in the truth

And I will daily lift my hand

For I will always think of

When your love came down.

I could sing of your love forever,

I could sing of your love forever,

I could sing of your love forever,

I could sing of your love forever.

Oh, I feel like dancing

It’s foolishness I know,

But when the world has seen the light,

They will dance with joy like we’re dancing now.

I could sing of your love forever,

I could sing of your love forever,

I could sing of your love forever,

I could sing of your love forever.

#1 Above All

Lenny LeBlanc/Paul Beloche 1995

Above all powers, above all kings

Above all nature and all created things,

Above all wisdom and all the ways of man,

You were here before the world began.

Above all kingdoms, above all thrones

Above all wonders the world has ever known,

Above all wealth and treasures of the earth

There’s no way to measure what you’re worth

Crucified, and laid behind a stone

You lived to die, rejected and alone

Like a rose trampled on the ground

You took the fall, and thought of me

Above all.

Zepaniah 3:17

I have heard it said that the Bible is God’s love letter to His people, and that sounds pretty good to me. But if you believe that the Holy Spirit inspires music and song as well as scripture, I would have to agree. These may not be your favorites, but love feels different to everyone. Spend time in His presence and seek out His will and words for you. I promise that He will sing over you, and His lyrics will be absolutely perfect! To you it will become the best of musical messages with God.

“He will delight over you with joy. He will quiet you with His love. He will dance for joy over you with singing.” Lord, I’m amazed by You!–Oh, that just might be #6!

God bless you, and may you thrill in your musical messages with God!
