Great Opportunities at Impact Ministries in Myrtle Beach
Back in May, I had the opportunity to take several high school seniors on a missions trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We partnered with Impact Ministries, and with our input, and considering the students’ individual gifts and talents, they provided an organized itinerary of service work that the students embarked upon with enthusiasm. Our students were even joined on a couple of projects by several visiting foreign students to provide for the many needy families in the area.
I know, folks may think that a resort community and tourist destination may not be much of a mission field, but there are many homeless and destitute people who live in close proximity to the famous beach who need the hands and feet of Christ. In addition, it’s a good thing for Christian young people to get some experience in sharing their faith. Who knows but that it might open hearts for more extensive missions work in the future.
Let me use the words of Impact Ministries to supply a little more information:
What kind of mission projects can Impact Ministries offer?
“Mission teams typically will host a day camp in a campground or housing complex in the evening. Ministries continue throughout the afternoon and evening utilizing evangelism tools to share the Gospel throughout the Grand Strand community. Some of these evangelism opportunities may include but are not limited to, reaching tourists through balloon art, face painting, prayer walking, beach, hotel ministry, puppets, and various concerts or performances. Our staff is very creative to seek new ways we can discover the needs of our tourists and locals as we share the message and love of Christ.”
My group baked cookies to take on a prayer walk and offer to various hotel workers, maintenance workers, and shop keepers that we encountered. Many times we were able to pray for those people on a one-to-one basis, as well as to provide a sweet treat, which always seemed to bring a smile. The students also helped with organizing supplies at a local food bank. They helped to set up and organize an outdoor “store” (free for those who needed items) with food, clothing, toys, shoes, and various donated household items. My favorite activity was visiting the senior living center where the students led some old favorite hymns, then each shared a favorite Bible verse and why that verse was important to them. Then they gifted a beautiful, long-stemmed rose to each resident. Some projects were as simple as collecting sea shells from the beach and writing a Bible verse or encouraging phrase on the shell with Sharpie markers, then returning the shells to the beach (above the tide line) where, prayerfully, they would be found by someone in need.
We stayed at the Impact Ministries Center in small apartments. The facility is only two blocks from the beach. The students had early mornings to enjoy sunrises (You know I was out there), devotions, and breakfast, and evenings to fellowship as they ate traditional barbecue meals by the pool, swam, shopped, gathered for ice cream on the boardwalk, and prayed together.
