Here’s what he says in a recent Instagram post about what NOT to say to people who are in the cult of Trump:
- Condescending or Judgmental Things
- Calling them names
- Calling them stupid
- Or anything that doesn’t take a respectful, curious, or open tone or establish a warm connection
As he points out, “People have been programmed, but their real identities, their values, their memories are still intact, and what is needed is – especially for friends and family members and co-workers – to be warm, to be respectful and to be curious.”
Hassan says that “[It’s important] to demonstrate open-mindedness yourself [when you] engage with them.”
He continues, “What you’ll find in interacting with members [of a cult] is that they spew memorized lines but there’s nothing behind it. That’s why if you ask a good question and are patient…not trying to give facts or persuade them, just asking questions, you’ll make a difference.”
So, ask questions like, “What does that mean?” and ask them how they know what they’re saying is true.
Another idea is to ask them to go back in time to when they didn’t believe in Donald Trump.
Ask them what their first memory of Trump was and was it was positive or negative. Many will say that their first memories of him were negative.
So, if you can get them to go back in time and ask them what they thought of him on The Apprentice they’ll likely say they thought he was arrogant or boastful or condescending.
Ask them gently, “What were the things that made you shift your mind on this guy…and is it possible you might be open to changing your mind again?”
Hassan also points out that a lot of the indoctrination from the MAGA cult is anti-Harris and Biden. Their opponents are vermin and communists and socialists and that they want to destroy the country.
Basically, a lot of fear-mongering.
Try to bring them back around to help them see how much of Trump’s rhetoric is fear-mongering. Ask them if they see the fear-mongering.
Be patient and follow up.
It may take some time, but this approach can really help your friends and family members who are trapped in the MAGA Cult to wake up and realize what’s really happening.
Basically, try to humanize your family and friends who are trapped in the Cult of Trump. One day he’ll be gone [hopefully very soon] and you’ll need to be there to help them process what happened and perhaps find a way back to sanity.
The sooner we help them escape the MAGA cult, the sooner we can begin to heal as a nation and restore relationships that have been damaged by Trump’s divisive rhetoric.
