INNER CIRCLE: Exposing Our Nakedness

INNER CIRCLE: Exposing Our Nakedness

“No one will hide something valuable in a great thing, but often someone will hide their treasure in an inconspicuous place. It’s the same with the soul, which is very precious and is incarnated in perishable matter.

“Some are afraid that they’ll arise naked. So, they want to arise in the flesh, and [they] don’t know that human beings are naked, with or without their flesh. However, those who make themselves simple to the point of nakedness are not naked.

“Flesh [and blood won’t] inherit [God’s] kingdom.” What is it that won’t inherit? It is the flesh and blood we identify ourselves with. That which will inherit God’s Kingdom is the flesh and blood of Christ. This is why he said, ‘Whoever doesn’t eat my flesh and drink my blood doesn’t have life in them.’” (The Gospel of Philip, vs 22-23)

This passage calls to mind what the Apostle Paul wrote in his second epistle to the ekklesia in Corinth:

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:7-9)

But, there is still more going on there than merely paraphrasing Paul’s observation about how the incorruptible is hidden within frail humanity. Much more.

Not only is this Gospel writer concerned with the mystery of why or how the spirit of Christ has come to reside within the human being, but they are also interested in addressing the concept of nakedness. While we may not immediately relate to those who are afraid to be resurrected without their flesh, we can certainly sympathize with the idea of being publicly exposed in our nakedness. But, as this Gospel writer points out, even those who arise in their flesh are still naked, because “human beings are naked, with or without their flesh.” So, what is the solution, then? How can humans avoid this shameful nakedness? Only by “making themselves simple to the point of nakedness.” In other words, by realizing that nakedness is an illusion fabricated by our concept of separation from one another. Because if we realize that we are all one with Christ, and therefore with one another, the idea of nakedness dissipates into absurdity. Would you be ashamed to see yourself naked in a mirror? Or would your own nakedness reveal your true self and erase every illusion created by your mind?

To become One with all things is to recognize that nothing about us is shameful. Nothing about me is embarrassing. Nothing about you is disgraceful. Nothing about the Christ is humiliating. Shame is what we feel when we believe the lie that our flesh creates a separation between us and God, or between ourselves and all other human beings. Our Oneness eradicates shame. Our shared Divinity eliminates this concept of nakedness. This is why it says that Adam and Eve were “naked and unashamed” in the Garden of Eden. Because they were One with God and had no conception of being separate from one another, or from the Divine Source.

What we must do is to awaken to the Truth of Divine Oneness and return to that Original Innocence which knows that separation is a lie.

The flesh and blood of Christ is united with Humanity and with God. This incarnation of the intertwined Creator and Creation into One being is what brings us life. This is what we must partake of if we want to truly live a resurrected life.
