A conversation with a few friends recently helped me realize something about the way humans and animals influence one another. When my friend, Mark, noted that interaction with humans helps to raise the consciousness of animals, it made me stop and consider the reasons why. For example, in the wild, animals have little empathy for one another. It’s kill or be killed, survival of the fittest. The cruelty is apparent when we watch lions chase and kill baby antelopes, or when we see chimpanzees smash infant gorillas onto the rocks, or when we watch documentaries about how killer whales hunt newborn dolphins for sport. These behaviors disturb us. They make us question how a good God could create such a brutal world and populate it with such heartless creatures.
But, as we read here in the Gospel of Philip, there is still the hope that love may eventually prevail. In the midst of all of the intense cruelty we see on our planet, there is still the chance that people with an awareness of our interconnectedness can raise the consciousness of other humans, and perhaps even animals as well.
This influence extends beyond mere domestication of certain animal species. Sure, wild dogs and feral cats can learn to trust and even coexist with one another as they are exposed to loving, patient human interactions. But, those and other animals can also be taught to regard other animals as equals, and to exhibit an uncommon empathy towards other species that would never be possible in the wild.
As Philip’s Gospel suggests, humans who raise the consciousness of other humans, and of animals, do so with the collaborative energy of the Spirit of God. In other words, the Divine Spirit that permeates all creatures is working to awaken all of us to our shared Divinity and that realization helps us to recognize that we are all connected to one another by that same Divine thread.
As it says above, “That’s what it’s like with realized Human Beings, who work with energies that respond to them. They prepare all things to come into being. Thus everything awakens, and is redeemed: good and evil, right and left.”
In other words, when we fully awaken to our true identity as expressions of the Divine Consciousness, we naturally begin to “work with [the] energies that respond” to us, and this is how we “prepare all things to come into being,” and to recognize their shared Oneness. This is how “everything awakens, and is redeemed, (both) good and evil, right and left.”
This is crucial to understanding the way the Spirit works in us and through us to transform all creation and allow God’s Kingdom reality to come on earth as it is in heaven. Everyone and everything must be – and will be – awakened to the reality of Divine connection. Our role is to help “prepare all things to come into being.” We don’t awaken, but we help make that awakening possible.
It shouldn’t worry us or trouble us that both the “good and evil” are redeemed. Once we understand that there is no such thing as separation we can more fully embrace the notion that there is no “right and left” or “good and evil,” only interconnected Divine expressions that have awakened – or are about to be awakened – by the Spirit of God.
The goal is expressed in the question: “What can hold back the flood?” In other words, nothing can stop this coming Kingdom reality from spreading. It is inevitable that all things will return to the Source, especially since separation from that Source is, in itself, only an illusion.
This is why Philip’s Gospel can say: “The Breath leads all things to their repose and aligns with the energies: the obedient, the wild and the solitary. The Spirit gathers them together so that they are no longer scattered.” Because all things are always One and nothing can ever separate us from the inescapable, ineffable, and infinite love of God that is higher and wider and longer and deeper than any of us can yet imagine.
If we are scattered, it’s only “in our minds” as the Apostle Paul proclaims in 1 Cor 1:21. What we need to realize is that our separation from God and from one another isn’t reality. The Spirit’s desire is to gather us all together and reveal the glorious interconnectedness of God in us and through us. This is accomplished by raising all consciousness to the place where that Oneness is simply obvious to everyone.
