Last Thursday we had the blessing to have Tatiana Cameron, or Tajci, at my parish. I had never heard of her until two or three months ago when Lindsey, the music director at my parish, said Tajci would be coming to the parish for a concert.
I was amazed by the beauty of her voice and the depth of her prayer. The 300 who attended were deeply moved. Rather than a concert, it was a sung meditation on the passion of Christ, the crucifixion story. It was perfectly and purposely timed for Lent.
A native of Zagreb in Croatia, Tajci was a very famous pop star in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1990 she represented Yugoslavia in the Eurovision Song Contest and won. Her career ended quickly due to the war that followed the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. She arrived to the United States in 1992 to begin a new life.
She married and began writing and singing faith-based songs and performing at Catholic Churches throughout the country. She is now on tour one third of the year and this is the only means by which she maintains her family. She often travels with her husband and children, her nine year old son was here with her.
Before the concert we shared a meal at the parish office. It was great to meet a faithful Catholic who is truly using her talents for the glory of God. Truly an inspiration!
I would strongly recommend seeing her if she comes to a parish near you. Her concert changes depending on the liturgical season. Look at her website to see her tour schedule.
