Papal election makes Argentinian senator emotional

Papal election makes Argentinian senator emotional March 16, 2013

While addressing the Argentinian Senate on Wednesday, Senator Liliana Negre de Alonso received the news Cardinal Bergoglio had been elected Pope.  “Bergolio was chosen?” she interrupted her speech.

She turned to the other senators to confirm what she had just learned.  Requesting permission to interrupt from the President of the Senate, Negre de Alonso became visibly emotional.  “Forgive me I cannot continue speaking, I am too excited.”  After being granted an interruption from the President, she continued:

“I am supremely excited as a Catholic, as an Argentinian.  Catholics of the world now have a new head.  As an Argentinian I feel extremely proud of a hero, of a martyr, of a man who has given his life to the church: perseverance, loyalty!  I stand symbolically before the new sovereign of the Catholic Church, before the Successor of Peter, before the representative of Christ on earth and my heart swells with pride because an Argentinian brother has risen to occupy this place.  Thank you Mr. Presdient.”
