Another Pregnancy Center Vandalized

Another Pregnancy Center Vandalized

In the past few weeks, a considerable number of Crisis Pregnancy Centers that assist pregnant women and new mothers have been vandalized throughout the country.  This has been done by those who oppose the repeal of the Supreme Court Decision Roe v. Wade.

Recently, I read about the vandalism at Bethlehem House in Easthampton, Massachusetts where people of good will assist women and their families facing a crisis pregnancy.  The words “Jane’s Revenge” and “If abortion isn’t safe, neither are you” were sprayed painted in benches outside the building and on the grounds.  The house itself was also vandalized.

One of the most common criticisms levied against pro-life organizations is that they only care about birth, and not about women and their various needs.  How come these vandals attacked a place where women receive all sorts of resources to help them not only with a crisis pregnancy, but other needs as well?  This tell me that the heart of the issue is not taking care of pregnant women and women in need, but simply the unfettered access to abortion.  If you claim to be pro-woman, why attack an organization that exclusively helps women?

I do not know of a single Crisis Pregnancy Center that does not also supply mothers with all sorts of items and resources to be a successful mother.  Recently, my parish “adopted” a pregnant Ukrainian refugee.  Through the goodness of parishioners and friends, we found her a place to live and to work, as well as a car.  We secured a doctor and a hospital that would tend to her needs at no charge.  We organized a baby shower, and have given her all the support she needs.

To say that pro-life organizations or churches do not care about the welfare of women is to push an ideology that does not conform to reality.  It reveals ignorance.  It is but a talking head that repeats what it has heard others say.

The Catholic Bishop of Springfield, Mass. wrote in response to the incident, “I was very sad to hear that vandals targeted Bethlehem House last night.  The messages spray-painted on the outside of the building appear to have one purpose and that is to intimidate the good people who depend on the assistance provided there, along with those who volunteer at Bethlehem House, whose sole purpose is to help women and their families facing a crisis pregnancy.  No matter where you stand on the issue of abortion, I pray all people of goodwill will join me in condemning this act and all acts of vandalism and violence against any group.  We are a people of life called to lead with love. That’s what we will continue to do. Please join me in praying for all affected by this incident.”
