It seems like every time I go online, there’s a new app out there. This is especially true as Christian apps devoted to different aspects of our faith. Whether it’s apps full of downloadable sermons, church apps to keep track of events, or places for believers to meet, Christian apps are a great way to help one another stand in faith.
If you’re interested in studying Scripture, there are many apps out there that can also help with that process. Here I will share the best Bible apps (all of which I use) for serious Bible students. While they don’t replace knowing how to use the Bible in print form, these Bible apps engage students in our modern-day high tech format.

Bible Gateway
My all-time go-to for years, Bible Gateway is a fantastic resource whether on app or desktop or laptop. Featuring more than 90 different translations of the Bible in several languages (including French, Spanish, German, Arabic, and Bulgarian), Bible Gateway is best known as a Bible search app. Its interface is easy to use, and makes the Bible accessible, no matter your level of experience. Whether you want to search for a word, a term, a portion of a verse, or a Bible verse, you can do so with Bible Gateway. You also can read entire passages or chapters with tap of a link.
Bible Gateway isn’t just Bible searches, however. The app also contains an entire section for Scripture engagement and provisional tools to help you get the most out of Scripture study. There are also additional study resources, including Audio Bibles, Bible reading plans, commentaries, dictionaries and encyclopedias, and study tools.
Bible Audio App
A sister app of Bible Gateway, this app allows you to take the Bible in audio form with you anywhere you go. With both a free and paid option, the Bible Audio App enables you to choose your translation, narrations, and reading plans no matter where you might be.
Blue Letter Bible
An amazing resource, Blue Letter Bible is probably my favorite app on this list. More than just a search for different Bible translations, Blue Letter Bible is a fabulous site for a complete and thorough manner of Bible study. Designed for cross reference, this app contains over 20 different translations and numerous tools that are accessible by search, whether by verse, word, or reference. Site includes searches, theological searches, lexicons, encyclopedias, dictionaries, charts, outlines, introductions to the Bible, harmony of the Gospels, videos, and more. Site also contains devotional readings and daily Bible reading programs, including the Chronological reading of the Bible in a year. An added bonus is the free Blue Letter Bible Institute, which allows users to take courses offered through Lancaster Bible Institute. A truly interactive tool, Blue Letter Bible helps students of all levels access a fantastic Bible library, all for free.
YouVersion
The YouVersion Bible App is available in a few different forms. There’s the main YouVersion Bible App, the BibleApp Lite, and the BibleApp for Kids. Designed to create connection between believers and the Bible in a modern format, YouVersion contains over 65 translations of the Bible. You can study and compare different verses, create shareable artwork of different Bible passages for social media, add friends, and search for local church events. You can also listen to audio versions of the Bible and follow daily devotional readings. With both free and paid plans, YouVersion is not as expansive a study resource as Bible Gateway or Blue Letter Bible, but it does offer the ability to share your study and incorporate others into it.
Logos Bible Study
The Logos Bible Study app is produced by the same people who create Logos Bible Study Software. A long-time staple in Bible study materials, this Bible Study app approaches Bible study in a scholarly way. Of particular interest to pastors, this app offers the ability to highlight text, create notes, compare translations, engage reading plans, and read commentaries, all alongside Bible text. It also gives the ability for split pane reading and tabbed browsing. Whether you want to look up a Hebrew or Greek text or create your own personal Bible reading plan, Logos offers numerous Bible dictionaries, texts, commentaries, and other tools to engage a scholarly study of Scripture. Free and paid options are available.
E-Sword
One of the original free computer programs for Bible study, E-Sword is now also an app. A donation-based program, E-Sword is an entirely free program that encourages thorough Bible study in an easy-to-use interface. Within this app you’ll find parallel Bible studies, a full study of text including concordance and word references, Strong’s tool tips, WYSIWIG printable editor, Bible tool tips, comparative Bible translations, searches, a complete reference library, maps, and audio sermons.
However you study the Bible…find your niche!
Bible study is unique for each one of us. No matter how you desire to study Scripture, there’s a Bible app out there to help you get the job done. If you’re more into the technical world and want to study your Bible everywhere you go (on phone, laptop, or tablet) check out one – or all – of the Bible apps listed above. You’ll definitely see the Bible in new ways, as you never have before, thanks to these great Bible apps!
