The Impact of Medical Trauma on Our Perception of God

The Impact of Medical Trauma on Our Perception of God May 23, 2024

Sometimes in life , we may encounter experiences that can shape our understanding of God and our faith. Medical trauma, in particular, can have a profound effect on how we view God and navigate our relationship with Him. In this article, I want to explore the complex interplay between medical trauma, resentment towards God, and the healing process. We will also highlight biblical verses that offer guidance and comfort for those seeking healing and renewed faith.

Understanding Medical Trauma
Medical trauma refers to the emotional and psychological distress that stems from negative experiences in healthcare settings. It can arise from various encounters, such as painful procedures, misdiagnosis, or even the actions of healthcare professionals. These traumatic experiences can lead to feelings of fear, anger, and mistrust, which may impact our perception of God and our faith.

LaQuita Parks: A Story of Resilience
One individual who has faced the long-lasting effects of medical childhood trauma is LaQuita Parks who is also a co author in my upcoming anthology Women of the Waiting Room Surgery For Your Soul set to release the first week of June 2024. For over 50 years, she has endured physical and emotional pain as a result of her traumatic experiences at the hands of a nurse. LaQuita’s journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the capacity for healing even in the face of immense pain.

The Role of Resentment and Healing:
Medical trauma can often lead to feelings of resentment towards God. The question of “Why did God allow this to happen?” may arise, challenging our faith and trust in His plan. However, it is important to recognize that these feelings are valid and part of the healing process. Through introspection, therapy, and support from others, individuals can begin to address their resentment and find a path towards healing and renewed faith.

Biblical Verses for Healing and Trust:
1. Jeremiah 17:14 (New International Version):
“Heal me, LORD, and I will be healed; save me, and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.”

2. Psalm 34:18 (English Standard Version):
“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

3. Isaiah 41:10 (New Living Translation):
“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”

These verses remind us that God is present in our pain and offers healing and strength. They assure us that God understands our brokenness and is ready to provide comfort and restoration in the midst of our suffering.

What Does Linda Think?

Feelings of resentment towards God can be a natural and valid part of the healing process for individuals who have experienced medical trauma. Here’s why:

1. Acknowledgment of Pain: Resentment towards God often arises from a deep sense of pain and injustice. By acknowledging and allowing these feelings to surface, individuals can begin to confront the trauma they have experienced. It is essential to recognize and validate these emotions as a crucial step towards healing.

2. Expressing Anguish and Seeking Understanding: Through resentment, individuals can express their anguish and seek answers to profound questions about why they had to endure such suffering. This process of questioning and seeking understanding can lead to a deeper exploration of faith and a more authentic relationship with God.

3. Trust and Rebuilding Faith: Resentment towards God can also be an indication of the shattered trust individuals may feel towards Him. By acknowledging these feelings, individuals can begin the process of rebuilding trust and reconstructing their faith.

This involves an honest examination of their beliefs and a willingness to engage in a dialogue with God, seeking His guidance and understanding.

4. Seeking Support and Guidance: Resentment can prompt individuals to seek support from others, whether through therapy, support groups, or spiritual mentors. Sharing their struggles and pain with others who have experienced similar trauma can provide comfort, validation, and guidance on the path to healing.

5. Surrender and Acceptance: Ultimately, the healing process involves surrendering the resentment towards God and accepting that there may not always be clear answers to the questions we have. It requires a willingness to let go of the need for complete understanding and instead trust in God’s plan, even in the midst of pain.

It is important to note that the healing process is unique to each individual, and there is no set timeline or formula.

The journey towards healing involves a combination of self-reflection, seeking support, and leaning on one’s faith. Through the process of addressing resentment, individuals can find a path towards healing, renewed faith, and a deeper connection with God.

Medical trauma can deeply impact our perception of God and our faith. However, through the journey of healing and the guidance of biblical verses, we can navigate our pain, address our resentment towards God, and allow Him to lead us towards renewed faith and wholeness.

The story of LaQuita Parks serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of healing. May we find solace and strength in the divine presence as we seek healing, understanding, and a deeper connection with God.
