The Rhythm of Life and Prayer
In this second post for the week, want to focus on how we can integrate the wisdom of Saint Benedict and Psalm 118 into a living, breathing prayer life. I have written many times on prayer, most recently, this past March.
I love prayer and I love the intimacy I receive with God when I start my day and continue my day with prayer. While I never made it to the monastery until after I became a Methodist preacher, when I did, I first encountered the tolling of the bells alerting us to the rhythms of the day and taking a moment to pray.
Incorporating prayer as the rhythm of our daily routine can provide greater purpose, enhance the quality of personal interactions, and makes God’s presence more insistent.
Rule of Saint Benedict Chapter 16: Prayer as Rhythm, Not Ritual
If we reflect on Chapter 16 of the Rule of Saint Benedict, we find an emphasis on the importance of regular, intentional prayer as a fundamental rhythm of monastic life. Rather than viewing prayer as a rigid obligation, Benedict frames it as spiritual nourishment that structures the day and aligns the heart with God. The chapter calls for prayer to be woven into daily routines, echoing the natural ebb and flow of life and fostering a continual sense of connection with the divine.
When you pray in the style of monastics, you are going to spend a lot of time in the Psalms. I remember when I was in the preformation process for monastic life, I came across a teaching that instructed Novitiates to learn the Psalms in such a way that they just bubble out of your person.
In the structure of monastic prayer, we gain a discipline that challenges us to practice stillness and presence. We learn that a stillness of body aides in the stillness of the mind. This stillness of mind then helps the stillness in one’s body. We often tie in mantras and in my experiences with the Benedictines, the mantras were the recitations of the Psalms and in my preformation process, multiple recitations of the rosary throughout the day.
In this way, the rhythm of prayer becomes more than a series of scheduled moments—it is a living pulse that animates every aspect of our days. Rather than separating prayer from the rest of life, we are invited to allow it to permeate the ordinary and the extraordinary alike, letting each activity become an opportunity to recognize and respond to God’s presence. By embracing this continual rhythm, we find ourselves drawn deeper into relationship with God, discovering fresh meaning and connection in every circumstance. The wisdom of Saint Benedict and the heartfelt cries of Psalm 118 encourage us to let prayer shape our routines, our attitudes, and our interactions, guiding us toward a life marked by gratitude, trust, and abiding love.
Psalm 118 as a Guide
Reflecting on Psalm 118, we are offered a guide as to how to remain steadfast, sit with gratitude and trust in God’s enduring love. Psalm 118 not only invites us to remain steadfast and grateful, but it also demonstrates a deeply personal way of engaging with God, modeling honest dialogue and heartfelt praise that is both vulnerable and hopeful. In its verses, we see the psalmist turning to God in moments of distress and triumph alike, reminding us that prayer is meant for all circumstances—not only for times of need, but also for times of celebration and reflection. This approach encourages us to bring our whole selves before God, trusting that every moment can be transformed by God’s enduring love, and that our ongoing conversation with Him shapes the very rhythm of our days.
When we allow God to presence itself in our every actions of the day and we engage constantly in dialogue and praise, our hope in God and our encourage from God grows in all circumstances in our lives.
Prayer as Dialogue: An Ongoing Conversation
Prayer can be viewed as an interactive process, one that involves listening and responding within a relationship with God. This approach is exemplified in the Benedictine tradition and in psalms, where prayer takes on a conversational form. As these conversations deepen with God, we experience deeper and a more intimate insistence on God’s presence.
Engaging in regular and sincere prayer positively shapes our thoughts and helps align our hearts with Christ, fostering qualities such as compassion, humility, and love, we close the God shaped hole in our lives. This transformative impact of continual prayer becomes evident as it encourages spiritual growth and deeper connection.
Rather than treating prayer as an isolated practice, integrating it into everyday life—through work, rest, and relationships—is encouraged. Following Benedictine advice, each action can become an opportunity to connect with God and deepen our spiritual journey.
Practical Steps: Weaving Prayer into Daily Life
While I may have spent close to two hours each day during my preformation process in prayer, I had that time in my early twenties. Now as a middle-aged dad and two and half jobs, I rarely have that luxury. On occasion, I do have that stand alone time to fully engage in lauds, none and vespers, most days it is reading several subscribed emails from authors who offer spiritual advice and listening to podcasts on a variety of theological and spiritual topics. Of course, sitting and being able to produce two blog posts a week is also an act of prayer for me.
When you don’t have time, there are a myriad of ways to engage in prayer. Set several reminders on your phone to encourage you to pause and offers words to God. I have a small Buddha statue that my coworker gave me last year for Christmas that reminds me to stop and breathe throughout my sessions. As mentioned, subscribing to email lists to get a daily mediation offer small, bite sized pieces of wisdom that you can ruminate on throughout the day.
Finally, embrace the meditative practice of seeing all people as potential seats of Christ is a prayerful and mindful way of offering thanks and gratitude for God’s insistent presence in the people we love and in the people who annoy us the most.
Conclusion: Embracing Prayer as the Heartbeat of Spiritual Life
To close this post, let these words be an invitation to embrace the rhythm of prayer as a vibrant source of life, not merely a duty. As my daughter often says, “it is not that deep”, keep it simple, just talk to God, God is forever presencing itself in every moment of our lives. We must step into ongoing, honest, and grateful dialogue with God—allowing prayer to transform our days and deepen your spiritual walk. May you be blessed with hope, encouragement, and a renewed sense of God’s presence as you weave prayer into every moment, discovering its power to guide, uplift, and sustain you on your journey.
