Magic & Religion = Chocolate & Peanut Butter

Magic & Religion = Chocolate & Peanut Butter

I knew a woman who claimed she laid hands on a transmission and healed it. A friend of mine has a relative who can cure poison ivy and oak by rubbing the rash and reciting bible verses. In the film Arranged Rochel goes to a religious woman who performs divination for her. Catholicism has intermarried with the indigenous beliefs of so many cultures that there are several magical systems involving angels and saints practiced around the world.

Why do religion and magic so often go hand in hand? Why does a belief in a greater being than ourselves so often accompany a belief that we can accomplish extraordinary things? What is it that makes magic such a pervasive part of culture and religious belief?

What is the relationship between magic and religion for you?
