As Above, So Below

I’ve been watching How the Universe Works and I’m fascinated. I think the thing I’m fascinated by most is how Wiccan cosmology and theology gives me a framework through which to understand the science before me. Though scientists are describing matter and antimatter as a battle between “good and evil” I’m seeing polarity in action. The opposites, the tension, these basic building blocks creating such wondrous diversity.

I think the thing that fascinates me the most is this strange contradiction in my own soul. While I feel the underlying science of the universe resonates rather nicely with my religion, yet I also feel very strongly that both my religion and human identity is based upon the earth. Every cell in my body is made up of earth stuff. My sense of direction is based on the earth. One day, we will have to abandon the earth. That day will come long, long after I am dead and my name is forgotten. But I still think about it. I may live to see the first space colony. How will they define themselves? How will it affect their faith? What myths, lore and culture will they develop to tie themselves to their environment?

This image has been floating around social media and it fires my imagination. Scientists now know galaxies group themselves into clusters, and the clusters into super-clusters and all these clusters live along these filaments. The images of the universe we have been able to construct are absolutely gorgeous, and they look like the cells in our very brains. As Above, So Below.
