Any witch worth her salt knows that the law of magic requires the practitioner’s total silence after the spell has been cast. Witches are forbidden to discuss or refer to a spell later, for once the magic has been worked the book is shut and the matter closed; that which happens within the circle remains within the circle.
This is not a difficult rule to live by if one is a solitary, for there is no-one to gossip with anyway, however it must be hard within a coven or community, where the temptation to gossip is much greater. This silence does not allow for recognition, and fits well with the witches code that does not allow for expectation or assumption; Gran said “Never expect appreciation!” However those who have been helped or healed know the score and seeing them improved makes it all worthwhile.
As spells are three dimensional prayers, there is always the worry of where the physical trinket should go once the magic has been woven; for in truth it must stay in tact, away from prying eyes and eager inquisitive little fingers. The answer greatly depends upon the nature of the spell. Some can be sent or gifted to the recipient for them to keep safe, whilst others need to be ‘held’, requiring a secure place, hence every witch has her own storage solution, mine is the big solid draw at the base a mahogany chest-of-draws, it is my ‘forbidden zone’ that remains firmly closed and locked. I have a friend who uses a small locked freezer in her garage, and another who puts them on top of her wardrobe in an old suitcase.
Gran used to draw a triangle in the soft soil , and as she drew she taught: “To know (first side of the triangle); to dare (second side); to do (third side) then she drew a circle around it all to conclude saying; To remain silent.”
She also cautioned , “A witch never threatens” and “A witch
never works in anger.”
But my favorite was and still is, “If you must meddle then meddle well.”
