I’m 30 and it’s hitting me hard. Older folks may chuckle at that, but I think we all have birthdays that hit us hard at different points of our life. My life today is not what I would have predicted or hoped it to be, in more ways than one. When I was 14 I would have said that by 30 I would be married to an Evangelical man, be a housewife and have at least 5 children. When I... Read more

Growing Pains was a cheesy show, and Kirk Cameron wasn’t the most memorable part of the show. I was a Tracey Gold fan. So when Kirk Cameron became a ridiculous tool for religious bigotry, it wasn’t a great loss to the entertainment world. It wasn’t like fantastic religious-themed films like Doubt or The Apostle were less for his absence. Now all of Hollywood is engaged in condemning and mocking him for his hateful bigotry, which I admit I find entertaining.... Read more

I’m watching Jumping the Broom on a lazy Sunday afternoon as I put off doing laundry. I’m also trying to plan out my month. And as the fabulous Loretta Devine is arguing over the cultural necessity of jumping the broom, and I’m planning out my spiritual activities, I’m wondering what would the spiritual or cultural necessities be for Pagans? In the concentration camps some Jews would risk their lives by hoarding just a little food during the week so they... Read more

I’ve been having trouble sleeping for awhile now. Couldn’t figure it out. I was tired all the time and beginning to fear something sinister like mold. So I stripped the bed yesterday to wash everything and I realized those soft, soft pillows my roommate put on my bed were feather pillows. I’m allergic to feathers. Last night some severe storms swept through my area, including at one point a warning that a possible tornado would be at my doorstep in... Read more

When I think of Ostara, I think of eggs, and of the multi-colored egg salad that is made the day after Ostara. And when I think of Divine images associated with eggs, I always think of Mary Magdalen. Most Pagans who convert from a Christian background go through a “What do I think about Jesus?” phase. I certainly did, and devoured Margaret Starbird’s books. I was able to frame my feelings regarding the Christian faith, not necessarily Christian culture, through... Read more

Back when stars like Rock Hudson remained deeply closeted and people warned Cary Grant against looking too chummy with Randolph Scott? Have we ever come a long way… This Saturday, March 3rd, at 7:30 PST you can watch a live-stream of a play based on the Prop 8 trial, called 8. Rob Reiner makes it sound pretty juicy. And he apologizes that he couldn’t get any big celebrities involved in the project. I guess they were afraid of hurting their... Read more

I’m connected to social media for a good portion of my day. I’m a daily user, for both personal and professional reasons. I pay attention to trends and notice changes quickly. I’m vocal about what I like, and what I hate. And Facebook has made another silly change that has gotten under my skin. Now not only does your personal profile look like MySpace, so do Pages. While I quite like the large header photo, the two column, non-linear, shifting... Read more

It fascinates me that there is no continuing education in Paganism (such as “Sunday School” or “Bible study”) but we have an endless series of 101 classes. I had to take them when I was considering the Alexandrian tradition of Witchcraft. I sometimes took classes twice when I was active in the Ravenwood tradition I was initiated in. Now I have rejoined Hellenion after an almost ten year absence and find yet another set of 101 classes facing me. Don’t... Read more

Watching the Oscars on your birthday is the worst thing you can do. You are sitting there in your yoga pants eating chocolate when it occurs to you that you are roughly the same age as Natalie Portman, and you feel like a slacker loser because you haven’t made a film based upon the work of Alan Moore. Bad birthday television. I love the Oscars, especially when Billy Crystal hosts. I like the glam, the gossip and the suspense. I... Read more
