It’s fascinating how news shapes our lives. When I awoke this morning I had no intention of writing about Christopher Hitchens and every intention of writing about human limitations. And yet, it seems Hitchens has met the ultimate human limitation: mortality. No, this won’t be one of those posts about the fate of Hitchens soul. His soul is in his own keeping and I merely tip my hat in respect for the work he did while living. Today, the idea... Read more
I have chosen a solitary Solstice this year. So much bombards us every day. Ads. Music. Shoppers. Noise. News. Chaos. Stress. Even I, who completely bowed out of the obligatory family Christmas and avoid stores, is still feeling the intrusion of this commercial juggernaut of the holiday season. So this solstice playlist is themed for the quiet, restful, joyous and solitary celebration of the season. It’s about letting go of the darkness. Of flying into the future. So I recommend... I get a kick out of Christian jokes as much as anyone who attended Vacation Bible School, but there’s seriously too much monotheism in the jokes over in the Patheos Book Club right now. So as much as I was raring to write something heartfelt and reflective today, I think it’s time to unleash the funny on these folks. *pretends to crack knuckles* Why is it great having Pagan friends? They literally worship the ground you walk on! What would... Read more
The internets went down this morning. I was out of internets, friends in the next county over were out of internets and I just learned folks in neighboring states were out of internets. That’s a lot of people who’ve completely run out of internets. According to Windstream, who has a complete monopoly on phone and internet service in my neck of the woods, there are still issues here and there. I was treated to the incomparable sight of a mob... This has been going on in my “backyard” and has been covered by The Wild Hunt already. Even with a thriving Jewish, Hindu, Muslim and Pagan population in the Atlanta area, this is still a part of the country where being religious means you’re a Protestant Christian. I have to say I’m impressed by the way the Atlanta Pagan community has come together over this case. Here’s the latest statement on the case: Statement from NGS, CoG, DLC, LLL, Circle... Read more
You don’t know Lena, although she has a big part in the creation of this blog. Lena is my laptop, and this month she turns 4 years old. I’m a little broken up about it. Lena has served me faithfully for years. She’s old. It’s getting to be time for her to go. She’s helped me blog, write articles, create badly recorded podcasts, join conference calls, create blogs, customize images and write numerous e-mails. It was via Lena I got... Read more
It would be disingenuous of me to write a holiday gift guide since I have sworn off gifts this year. It also feels wrong to write a “Best of 2011” list when my “liturgical year” has already ended, and shouldn’t we focus more on Pagan culture than overculture? So my compromise is this: I’m going to write about a few of my favorite things. Some of these you can buy. Some represent what I’ve loved about the past year. Some,... Read more
In the film Moonstruck, the grandfather takes his dogs on a walk at night. He encourages them to howl at the big, bright, beautiful moon hanging over Manhattan. Because of that film I’ve taken to shouting at the moon when I see it looking particularly gorgeous “Bella! Luna bella! Grazie Luna! Bella! Grazie!” Tonight, many of us will be celebrating the full moon. Some of us may have caught a glimpse of the lunar eclipse this morning, and said a... Read more
