Labor Day: Acknowledging the Contribution of Workers

Labor Day is  observed in America  the first Monday of September to celebrate the economic and social contributions of workers.  When it was first initiated at the end of the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution was pulling to a close and workers’ rights were largely ignored.

The rights of workers to fair treatment is guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  Unfortunately, although this document was ratified by all member states of the United Nations in 1948, these rights are still violated in countries throughout the world.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to be effective, must be known, understood and enforced.
