Small Towns and Red Counties

Small Towns and Red Counties September 3, 2024

I have a suspicion that many small town people like myself hold on to things too long. We are loyal to our ideals and we are slow to change. There are good noble reasons for this, but we now find ourselves at a crossroads.

My solution to this a few years ago was to change from a Republican to an Independent. I wanted to be able to seriously consider the issues, without the demands of a political party telling me what to think so that their person could get elected or reelected.

I realize I don’t get a voice in the primaries this way, but I feel like it gives me some freedom to make the best choice based on the evidence and what actually is true.

The problem with the Republican party today is that it has been co-opted by a former Democrat that has serious mental issues and, because he is a narcissist, cares mostly about himself and not about people. He doesn’t care if we hate each other, because according to those near him, he despises his own supporters.

Covid and conspiracy theories further changed the landscape to a playing field that is almost unbearable. Truth seems to matter less than ever before.

Even many of the notable people of his party quietly wish he would go away, but find themselves in a conundrum where their party has been gutted and conformed to the will of this unhinged person.

My county is 75% red, and because they are loyal, they will tend to vote for this man who doesn’t represent any of their values.

A former mentor of mine taught me that sometimes it’s better to take a loss and regroup them to make winning the only issue. I have some respect left for red states because I know the people of my own county. But I request one thing from them this year because of where we are.

Please consider voting blue to give your politicians a wake up call, because they are not the same party that your grandparents knew when they set you on this course.

I’m sorry greedy politicians led us astray and caused us to hate each other unnecessarily. I still believe in people because my town and county is small enough that we know each other.

I hope we all emerge stronger after this election and vow to do the hard work it takes to repair what politicians have done to us.

Be where you are, be who you are, be at peace
