ALEXANDRIA, VA – Guadalupe Radio Network recently honored His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, with its ‘Fishers of Men Award.’ The award presentation took place on April 26 at the Catholic network’s annual dinner, preceded by a Divine Mercy Vigil Mass celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph L. Coffey of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS).
AMS Auxiliary Bishop Coffey received the award–the Our Lady of Guadalupe stole with a special embroidered inscription on the collar–on behalf of Archbishop Broglio, who was at the Vatican for the funeral of Pope Francis. In his acceptance remarks, Bishop Coffey said: “I am honored to receive, on behalf of Archbishop Broglio, the Fishers of Men Award from the Guadalupe Radio Network. I am sure that every morning that he wakes up he thinks about and prays for the men and women in our United States Military, their families, the Veterans, and the priest chaplains who serve them in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Chaplains Corps and the VA hospitals who are in his spiritual care. May God bless him in this global ministry.”
The radio network, EWTN’s largest affiliate network, in its 25th year, celebrates on May 5th, 15 years of serving Catholics and seekers alike through WMET 1160 AM, the first Catholic radio station in the Nation’s Capital Region, serving seven million potential listeners and tens of thousands more worldwide via digital media.
Each year, the Network, operating via 47 radio stations, honors a man, woman or couple, whether a layperson, priest, bishop, or religious. Regardless of his or her state in life, this person epitomizes Love of God and Love of Neighbor. Their life witnesses to the heroic effort of evangelization. Mother Angelica said it best: Evangelization is simply telling someone that God loves them. Previous honorees attending the dinner included Bishop Emeritus Paul S. Loverde of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington; Monsignor Charles Pope of the Archdiocese of Washington; and the Little Sisters of the Poor, as represented by Mother Superior Margaret Regina Halloran of the Jeanne Jugan Residence in Washington, D.C.
Archbishop Broglio, as the Honorable Michele B. Bowe, Ambassador of the Order of Malta to Palestine, noted in her introduction, has always had an “exemplary, evangelistic vocational path, with the charism of … Priest, Prophet, and King. A ‘Priest’s priest,’ serving those who serve. He is steadfast in his vocation and grateful to be a servant of the Lord. He selflessly ministers to his flock travelling around the world non-stop, over 250 days a year, to encourage and fortify their faith.”
“A prophetic servant, giving voice to the voiceless and ensuring pastoral care to the forgotten,” she said, “including veterans, refugees and the vulnerable among us. He champions religious liberty while promoting cohesion among his brother bishops, balancing traditional teachings with contemporary challenges.… Archbishop Broglio leads by example. His disciplined, loving, prayerful and quiet way points to the Cross.”
“He evangelizes as Priest, Prophet and King … leading us to the Heavenly Jerusalem – the Kingdom of God.”
“Dynamic Deacon” Harold Burke-Sivers, EWTN Radio Host, gave a powerful keynote on evangelization in this Pilgrim Jubilee Year of Hope.
At the Basilica of St. Mary in Alexandria, Va. prior to the dinner, Bishop Coffey celebrated Divine Mercy Vigil Mass, concelebrating with three AMS priests, Monsignor Anthony R. Frontiero, Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia; Father Mark Rutherford, J.C.L., Judicial Vicar; and Father Paul-Anthony Halladay, CH (MAJ), USA (Ret.), Director of Vocations. They were assisted by AMS Deacon, the Rev. Mr. Michael Sampson and Deacon Burke-Sivers.
The Network expressed thanks to Basilica Rector, the Very Rev. Edward Hathaway, for hosting the liturgical celebration.
Bishop Coffey congratulated Guadalupe Radio Network for its legacy of evangelization and thanked the Network for honoring Archbishop Broglio. Knights of Columbus Assembly 2204 provided its Color Guard, to cap the celebration of the Worldwide Shepherd and Servant to the People of God.
