Grand Coteau, LA, October 6, 2025 — On holy ground known as the “miracle zip code—70541,” Grand Coteau Retreats is writing a new chapter in a story of faith nearly two centuries old. The Jesuits who arrived in Grand Coteau in 1837 left a lasting legacy of education, spiritual formation, and one of the few Vatican-recognized miracles in the United States—when, in 1866, St. John Berchmans, SJ, appeared at the neighboring Academy of the Sacred Heart and miraculously cured a young postulant. Today, that same sacred soil is home to a now thriving retreat ministry where clergy and laity gather to encounter God through silence, prayer, and community.
Nestled on more than 200 acres in the heart of Acadiana, Grand Coteau Retreats has been newly renovated to welcome groups and individuals from across the country and the world. Retreat offerings include silent preached or directed retreats in the Jesuit tradition, couples retreats, themed retreats, parish missions, and youth gatherings. Additional opportunities for personal faith formation include daily chanted Divine Office, sung Masses, outdoor Stations of the Cross, walking Rosary, holy hours with Benediction, and Marian torchlight processions to the stunning Lourdes Grotto.
“We have not only seen a physical revival of these historic buildings, but we have also witnessed a holy longing by Catholics for sacred space for prayer, silence, and a deeper connection to God that can be hard to find in daily life,” Fr. Hough added. “Grand Coteau is not just about retreats but about personal spiritual renewal, mirroring the renewal of this historic campus.”

Grand Coteau is home to two interconnected campuses—St. Charles College and Our Lady of the Oaks—each providing space for prayer, community, and silence. Founded in 1837 as a Jesuit boys’ preparatory school, St. Charles College later became a seminary and formation house, serving that role until recent years. While the site remains closely associated with the Novitiate, its mission expanded in 1938 with the establishment of Our Lady of the Oaks Retreat House, which has grown from hosting retreats for men to welcoming women, youth, and parish groups from across the country.
“In this digital age, undisturbed time with our Lord has never been more important to the Christian life,” said Fr. Patrick Hough, SJ, Executive Director of Grand Coteau Retreats. “Spiritual retreats offer the necessary time and space to listen to God’s voice and discern His will in an increasingly noisy world. Further, canon law requires priests to make time for spiritual retreat every year to model Christ’s example of prayer before public ministry. Grand Coteau offers retreatants comfortable, well-appointed rooms with scenic views of our beautiful grounds, and we want this to continue to be a place where people have beautiful encounters with Christ for generations to come.”
Plans are underway to transform Grand Coteau’s former barn and outbuildings into Cajun-style cottages—welcoming even more visitors to experience the peace and beauty of the sacred place. Additional planned renovations to campus include the addition of new queen beds in every room, refreshed chapels, a modern and user-friendly booking system, and the restoration of the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto. Private groups are welcome to host their own events, or individuals may register for one of many scheduled retreats available on Grand Coteau’s robust retreat calendar.
