The Table Spread is the English translation of Surah Al-Ma’idah – the title of the fifth chapter of the Islamic holy text, the Quran. The title specifically takes its name from Verses 112-114:
[And remember] when the disciples said, ‘O Jesus, Son of Mary, can your Lord send down to us a table [spread with food] from the heaven? [Jesus] said,’ Fear God , if you should be believers.’
They said, ‘We wish to eat from it and let our hearts be reassured and know that you have been truthful to us and be among its witnesses’
Jesus, the son of Mary, said ‘O God , our Lord, send down to us a table [spread with food] from the heaven to be for us a festival for the first of us and the last of us and a sign from You. And provide for us, and You are the best of providers.’
The Table Spread is an important reminder of God’s numerous blessings. It fills the heart with gratitude with the realization that even as we fight for equality, search out truths, demand justice, weigh in on important and relevant issues and work to improve our world, even the ability to carry out simple tasks would not be possible had He not fulfilled our most basic needs.
