What is the price tag for a saved soul? Many people all over the world flock to churches to seek solace, peace, and prayer to name a few. Pastors, and spiritual leaders must have a reasonable living to stay capable of doing their work, but when does donating get out of hand? Earlier this year Gospel singer and pastor Marvin Saap went under fire for locking his congregation into the church until they all donated enough funds to equal 40,000. The incident went viral on social media and sparked a lot of conversations on the potential abuses of the clergy. The pastor later defended his actions stating that he didn’t actually hold the congregation hostage. He stated he was rather trying to create a safe space for donating. Naturally many on Reddit threads and in the media rebuffed this defense.
Don’t be fooled by the rocks that I got.
Users also argued that the pastor did not look destitute. In videos online he has been seen wearing gold watches, expensive jewelry, and appears well dressed. Of course, this does not mean there is no financial concern anywhere in his life. There are of course grants and non-profits that support the Christian faith, it is possible the pastor could have went this route in achieving his 40,000.
Another even more well-known pastor has been accused of deceptive financial behavior is Pastor Joel Osteen. Osteen’s net worth is projected to exceed $50 million, with his church generating annual collections of $43 million. Osteen refuted claims of receiving any pandemic-related CARES Act funding; however, records from the U.S. Small Business Administration indicated that his church indeed obtained $4.4 million from the fund.
No shelter for the faithful.
In the early aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in August 2017, Osteen faced criticism for not offering Lakewood Church, a 606,000-square-foot, as an emergency shelter for individuals affected by the hurricane. In particular, as Osteen is perceived as a wealthy pastor with an extravagant church, this action was shocking to locals.
To discuss another religion, The Church of Scientology has had a constant reputation for draining the wallets of their members. Some may not view Scientology as legitimate, due to their tax-exempt status they are considered to be one by the IRS. With this, all the notorious funds received for classes, teaching, coaching etc. go back into the church and those who run it.
Shotgun Enlightenment.
Actress Leah Remini has been a whistleblower for the experiences of those inside the church. On her podcasts and documentaries, she’s discussed the multiple thousands of dollars one must spend to move up the ranks in Scientology.
To reiterate, clergy staff and spiritual figures have the right to earn a reasonable living. However, pushing enlightenment with abusive or extreme tactics can lead to tyranny.
