Los Angeles Sex Abuse Settlement

Los Angeles Sex Abuse Settlement July 16, 2007

I’m going to do something here that I will probably regret. Herewith is an open comment box for any issues you would like to discuss regarding the sex abuse case settlement in Los Angeles.

Personally I think it is a sad day. While this won’t win me any sympathy awards, an average settlement per plaintiff of over $1,000,000 is gross and ridiculous. That the archdiocese feared damages could be greater than that if awarded by a jury speaks to our dysfunctional justice system. There were some truly awful cases, and I do believe that justice compelled the archdiocese to make amends with the victims.

Given 40 years of cases to evaluate and the prospect of tens of millions in attorneys fees, I wonder what kind of settlement some of the major school systems in this country would have to come to if they were targeted like the Church has been. We will never know the answer to this, because schools have limited immunity. If that is too unsympathetic, how about the plaintiff’s attourneys donate all money gained in this settlement, less $100 per billable hour, to the plaintiffs?
