Latest Iraqi Poll

Latest Iraqi Poll September 11, 2007

Key points:

63 percent think the US invasion and occupation was wrong (35 percent said “absolutely wrong”).

80 percent disapprove of the performance of the US in Iraq.

53 percent strongly oppose the presence of US forces in Iraq (only 20 percent supports).

47 percent say the US troops should leave now.

57 percent think attacks on occupying troops are acceptable.

46 percent think a withdrawal will make a civil war less likely (and 19 percent say no effect).

72 percent said the occupation is making security in Iraq worse.

61 percent think the security situation in Iraq got worse over the past 6 months.

70 percent claim the surge has made security in these areas worse.

70 percent say the surge has made it harder for effective political dialogue.

65 percent said the surge has made it harder for the Iraqi government to function.

67 percent said the surge has worsened the pace of economic development.

The picture is clear. The Iraqi people see the US and its allies as a hostile occupying force, and want it to leave. They see it as contributing to, not solving, the problem. Those who believe the US needs to stay for security reasons should take heed. And I would rather listen to the voice of the Iraqis than some journalists embedded with the occupying forces.
