Cheating in Sports

Cheating in Sports September 14, 2007

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has noticed the disappointing trend in sports lately: steroids controversies in baseball, soccer and cycling (even golf!), espionage in Formula 1 and football, referees betting on basketball games… and these are only the instances that we know of, because they have been “caught in the act.” What about the ongoing cheating in sports that we don’t know about or won’t ever know about?

Sports (when enjoyed in moderation) are a great form of leisure. They bring people together regardless of age, gender or ethnic background. Families come together for these events and complete strangers cheering for the same team talk as if they had been knowing each other forever.

But what do we do when the integrity of the game is compromised with cheating? I have to say I am a disappointed professional baseball (and now Formula 1) fan. I loved baseball, especially. My dad raised me being a baseball fan and my brother plays baseball quite well, but I have not been inspired to go watch an Astros game.  I don’t believe in the game anymore. Am I the only one who feels like this?
