Reverend William P. Callahan, OFM Conv., has been appointed Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. The appointment was made by Pope Benedict XVI and announced in Rome, October 30.
Bishop-elect Callahan, 57 (born June 17, 1950), is a Conventual Franciscan of the St. Bonaventure Province in Chicago. A native of Chicago, Callahan has served in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee as associate pastor of the Basilica of St. Josaphat Parish, from 1977 to 1978, and, again, as rector and pastor of St. Josaphat Parish, from 1994 to 2005. Callahan left the parish in 2005 and currently serves as Spiritual Director for the Pontifical North American College, the seminary for Americans, in Rome.
As added information, I have attended the Basilica of St. Josaphat several times. The Franciscans offer a wonderful liturgy. I remember the Easter service several years ago being accompanied by a small orchestra. Architecturally it is a jewel. Those in the Milwaukee area and those traveling through Milwaukee would do well to make a pilgrimage to St. Josaphat’s, locating one block from the Interstate. Congratulations Fr. Callahan.
