Some News From and About Africa November 10, 2007

Interesting news from Nigeria: they have started a program to put Catholic chaplains at police barracks throughout the land.  As reported by Nathaniel Jonah Abuja on AllAfrica.com, “The catholic chaplaincy initiative, which involves the setting up of religious worship centres in police barracks across the 36 states of the federation, is designed to sharpen the character traits of men of the force, especially since most of them are always too busy in the line of duty to have time for religious activities.” I will be curious to see the effectiveness of this program.

In Zimbabwe, it is reported that one in three in Zimbabwe are facing starvation in the near future. While debt relief, such as we see in H.R. 2634: the Jubilee Act for Responsible Lending and Expanded Debt Cancellation of 2007, will help, clearly there is immediate need for something more substantial and effective to reach Zimbabwe now to avert such a major catastrophe.

Finally, some good news about Sudan: Jason Small, Deputy Director of African Affairs, Sudan  at the U.S. Department of State suggests that the U.S. is “very hopeful” that we will see an end to the war and humanitarian crisis in Sudan soon.
