It is often said, or assumed — here at Vox Nova and elsewhere — that, in the upcoming election, those who oppose (as we all should) torture will, because of this opposition, have a good reason to prefer the Democratic candidate (notwithstanding his or her strong support for abortion rights, etc.) over the Republican candidate because — it is assumed — the Democratic candidate, unlike the Republican candidate, will not be a raw utilitarian when it comes to detention-and-interrogation matters. Does this story call this assumption into question?
