As a man in tough with his inner feminine side, I looked forward to 28 Dresses with great anticipation. The Mrs. nevertheless insisted upon joining me. I would typically not burden her with such a film. She suspected this movie might be a “chick flick”. Needless to say, I was shocked when I found only 4 other guys in the theater. Oddly enough these men were escorted by other women. The poor gentlemen in front of me was escorted by a spouse and two daughters. I offered prayer to St. Jude for this poor soul. He probably insisted on coming to the movie when he learned it starred a gal from Grey’s Anatomy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NY_1oz5Jj0M27 Dresses (USCCB: AIII – Adults Only) is about a woman who looks out for the needs of others without considering her own needs. Having taken responsibility for raising her sister when their mother passed, she is the typical Ma Hen. She finds she can’t ignore her own desires when her sister becomes quickly engaged to her boss. She has given largely unnoticed absolute devotion to her boss, secretly longing for his affection. Guiding her through her conflicted loyalties is a perpetual cynic and wedding reporter.
Overall the movie was fairly predictable throughout. There is no deep plot to figure out. Good guys and villains are readily identified. The only Church wedding I recall is the one in the beginning of the film when she is a flower girl. The end of the movie features an entirely cliched and predictable wedding. Despite the focus on fashion, ceremony, and the interplay of emotions, many women should enjoy the film. Men should be able to identify with the cynical and sarcastic wedding reporter. If this is not enough, the souls in purgatory should benefit.
