Why Do You Pick On Republicans?

Why Do You Pick On Republicans? January 30, 2008

In one form or another, many people ask the question, “Why do the bloggers on Vox Nova point out the inconsistencies of Republicans who claim to be pro-life when Democrats are not better?” A variation  of this question was just put up by Christopher Blosser on Catholics in the Public Square.

First, I would point out that this is a selective reading of the blog, and a selective reading of those who have posted concerns about various Republicans. Criticisms have been posted and will continue to be posted on Democrats by the same people who are critical of Republicans. These comments might not get as much attention, because they might seem a bit obvious when they are posted, or they might be on issues where some Republican likes the policy being questioned. But don’t act like these comments do not exist. That’s dishonest.

My second point, I think, is the most important one. When the issue is what it means to be pro-life and a part of the pro-life movement, who among the Democrats claim to be pro-life or a part of the pro-life movement? Do we need post after post saying “Democrats are for abortion”? Would it say anything new that the readers of the blog didn’t know? Probably not. If someone were to suggest Hillary is pro-life then I think a post showing why she isn’t is valid. But has this happened not? No? Then don’t be surprised no one is posting a comment on something which doesn’t exist.

Who are the ones candidates people usually associate with the pro-life movement? The Republicans. But, if someone claims to be pro-life, then an examination of that claim is important. That is the issue. One needs to know whether or not the claim is valid. It is at that point there is the need for a critical analysis of the claim. Anyone who claims to be pro-life needs to prove it and not just through words. Their policies, how they word their policies, and the exceptions they are willing to give are what we use to examine their claims; and if people say “well, their policies are not perfect” well, isn’t that the same thing as saying they really are not pro-life? Where’s the beef?!
