Potty Training Trains Me

Potty Training Trains Me

When you first have a new baby everyone refers to you as a “new mom.” 2 1/2 years down the road the title fades, yet in reality I still am a new mom. Just as my daughter discovers the world a little at a time, so do I discover parenting one step at a time. Big Girl shows me how much I don’t know. Potty training. Most of us have zero memories of our time learning how to join the non-baby world of elimination so when you have a kid you have to relearn what it is like.

Lesson #1: It is useless to be in a hurry when your kid needs to go. You know when you are piously praying before the Blessed Sacrament and sweetly praying “Lord, please give me the Grace of more Patience.” The Lord in Heaven snickers to Himself and a few days later, pregnancy test in hand, and you–completely disconnected by joy from thinking pregnancy=answer to prayer for patience–are thrilled. Flash forward 3 years later, you are in a hurry and your kiddo is on the potty and . . . nothing. Big Girl tells you “it takes time, momma!” Suddenly you remember that moment three years before where you prayed in front of the Tabernacle for said patience and you have to laugh. If anything, the answer to that prayer is REALLY cute AND gives great hugs and kisses!
