Socialists to win big in Spain, make impact in French elections March 9, 2008

Proving that its recent ascent to ruling power after the 2004 11-M bombings was no fluke, the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party) is projected to win big today in Spain’s general elections, perhaps even gaining an absolute majority in parliament.

UPDATE: Reuters and The Washington Post suggest that the PSOE will fall just short of the absolute majority, though the party made significant gains.

In related news, Nicolas Sarkozy and his party appear to have suffered a setback today in France with the Parti Socialiste set to take a number of local government positions, which will be officially decided in a runoff next Sunday. Only 10 months removed from his major victory over PS candidate Marie-Ségolène Royal in the French presidential election, it is surprising to see his party already shaken a bit.
