When I originally saw previews of this movie a year ago, I thought it would be bad. After having a neighboring family compliment it, I decided to take the children to it. Those expecting a sci-fi movie will be disappointed. The movie does have certain epic qualities to it. One of the better things about the movie is that it lacks a lot of the adult humor that similar films like Shrek and Madagascar employed liberally. You won’t find a string of double entredres in WALL-E. What you will find is a pretty decent film with a simple theme.
For most of us that theme will be quite simple and one we are well familiar: our joy is not found in the things provided for us but in providing for others. Some have termed the movie as environmentalist. A depopulated earth filled with garbage is certainly an effect of environmental neglect. That is almost conceding too much though. It is a failure of the most basic act of stewardship. The humans cede their care of creation to a corporation in exchange for a life of ease in which they need not even concern themselves with minimal body movement. WALL-E and Eve end up expressing one of the most human of emotions, general affection and caring.
