Refugees, Immigrants, Migrants — A Problem For More Than The United States

Refugees, Immigrants, Migrants — A Problem For More Than The United States July 28, 2008

I noticed this story today about a Catholic Iranian trying to get political asylum in Georgia (the country, not the state), and the run-around has had in the process. It looks like he might have to leave – and his will will be at risk if he does.

While I would wish that the United States could do something to help him, the sad fact of the matter is that I think as long as its immigration and refugee laws need reform, it’s not going to be able to give a credible voice as regards to the practices of other nations (to say they need reform is not to deny the need some sort of immigration law, but it must be more justly set and followed than it is now).

While it is right to work and interact on a local level, the world is too inter-connected to think only in local terms. What you do locally will affect others, and can lead to the deaths of innocents. And what you will do locally will affect your reputation and ability to lead by example when there is a need to do so. There has to be a balancing act; sadly, very few people seem to understand this.
