Vox Nova on the Internets: Loury v. McWhorter

Vox Nova on the Internets: Loury v. McWhorter August 2, 2008

If you’re looking for an insightful, entertaining, and often provocative discussion of race in America, you would be hard pressed to do better than watching the “diavlogs” at Bloggingheads.tv between John McWhorter and Glenn Loury.

McWhorter is a linguist and writer, generally conservative, yet also an Obama supporter. Glenn Loury is an economist and former conservative who has moved considerably left in recent decades, but who is still something of an Obama skeptic. In the videos, they argue about everything from the various possible causes of the current condition of black America, to the morality of white racial identity. And, of course, Obama, Obama, Obama, Obama.

While I am more generally sympathetic with McWhorter’s point of view, I often find myself thinking that Loury has gotten the best of a particular exchange. But regardless of who has “won” a particular round, I nearly always find myself feeling edified after watching their thoughtful exchanges.
